Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz
  • An Idea
  •  for Rosh HaShanah
13
The day of judgment: frightening?  Depressing?
  • A person’s nature is that when he faces a trial and feels unsure, he becomes full of negative emotions, tension and sometimes dispair and anger towards the judge.
  • Who can feel confident towards being judged by the Creator?!
  • If so, how can we approach the day of judgment without despair and with positive feelings?
14
To connect!
  • Fright stems from a feeling of estrangement.  To connect, one must understand the opposite side and plunge his depths.
  • The depth of the judgment on Rosh HaShanah is the revelation of the Creator’s kingship in the world.

The said idea is hinted in the name of the month:

"What are letters"
  • What are letters?
  • Letters are “signs”, a means of conveying some meaning between people or from one point to another.
20
The meaning of the middle and end of the letters:

  • The alphabet in reverse order means an opposite flow, the prevention of influence, condensation, limitation and the attribute of judgment.

  • The alphabet arranged in its direct order means a direct flow, progress, influence, giving and the attribute of kindness.

We are accustomed to avoid sour food on Rosh HaShanah
(Shulchan ‘Aruch).
  • The problem does not stem from the sour food itself but from the person’s sour face when he eats it.

Charms (Segulos)
26
"Rabbi Pinchas’s wisdom encompassed the..."
  • Rabbi Pinchas’s wisdom encompassed the science of medicine.  He was especially known for the segulos he would give the ill.
  •   By the way, he even then determined, as opposed to the common opinion, that smoking is unhealthy!
  •   Many segulos are known as originating with Rabbi Pinchas and we present one of them, connected with Tishrei:

A Chanukkah lamp

Pay attention: What’s special about it?

(The answer is in the next frame).
31
"What’s special about this Chanukkah..."
  • What’s special about this Chanukkah lamp is that it has two shamashim.
  • Since when do we light two shamashim on Chanukkah?
  • There’s an interesting historical reason.  The European kings always wanted to impose taxes that would especially harm the Jews.  One of these taxes was the candle tax.  Candles were always an outstanding Jewish commodity: for the Sabbath, for yahrtzeit, Chanukkah, the synagogue, etc.
  • A tax was collected for every candle bought.  The Jews therefore wanted to limit the use of candles to a minimum.  What did they do?
  • As on the eve of every Sabbath, a woman must light two candles also for the Sabbath of Chanukkah.  In addition, the husband must light a shamash in his lamp.  As the halachah allows us to regard the same candle as a Sabbath candle and a shamash, the wife would kindle her Sabbath candles on the Chanukkah lamp so that they could serve as shamashim and thus save candles.

Rabbi Pinchas’s burial site
  • Rabbi Pinchas passed away and was buried in Shepetovka on his way to Eretz Israel.
  • The cemetery in Shepetovka was ancient.  The residents inaugurated a new cemetery a long time after his demise.
  • Over the years, Shepetovka grew and surrounded the old cemetery on all sides.  After the Second World War, the authorities destroyed the old cemetery and built the center of the town on the site.
  •   The Jews were afraid to move Rabbi Pinchas’s bones and erected a memorial for him in the new cemetery, which still stands.
